Happy Book Week everyone!!
We're visiting the library this week! How wonderful.
Have you been to a BCC library? Are you or your child a member? It's free and simple to do and your child will receive their own library card. There are so many things to do and see at the library and you can borrow up to 20 items! Your child can find books about their own personal interest, promoting a desire to read and discover more!
Libraries are such wonderful community resources!
Research shows that raising a child in a home filled with books positively impacts their future academic growth and job attainment. A book-filled home encourages a culture of reading for enjoyment and talking about books! Being surrounded by lots of books helps children build vocabulary, increase awareness and comprehension, and expand horizons — all benefiting them in adulthood.
Remember that enjoying books can involve reading the pictures, not just the words. Use prompts with your child like:
If we look at the pictures, what do we think is happening?
What might happen next?
Why do you think it happened?
Picture reading also promotes the development of a child's sense of bigger situations or backgrounds which in turn build comprehension. Reading means LOTS of different things.
